The early church was a Spirit-filled but very human community, capable of both radical generosity and also dangerous deception. The Holy Spirit is holy and takes seriously the lies and hypocrisy we perform for social approval while holding back true surrender to God. Yet despite human sin and growing opposition, nothing could stop the gospel: angels freed prisoners, the sick were healed, and bold witnesses kept proclaiming Jesus even under threat of death. Gamaliel’s words ring out across 2,000 years of history: “If it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it.” The gospel is an unstoppable force, and that truth is meant to replace our anxiety with boldness, and our silence with witness.
